I need to vent, so have a cool car
So, I get off work at 3am (fyi, I live less than a mile away). I get home and I do what I always do, I check my phone before I head inside. But this time I got really (suddenly) tired so I decided to take a nap before I headed inside..... with my iPhone in my lap. Anyway, I awake an hour later and get out of my truck to go inside, but I forgot my phone was there. I obliterated my screen on the driveway. Now it hurts to touch my phone. Looks like the cash I had set aside for a new windshield is going to a new phone screen, apple charges $109. I hope I dont have to remove my jailbreak. I have never broken an iPhone screen before I got my iPhone 6. I started with the first iPhone, and I wasnt particularly gentle with any of my iPhones, Apples quality has gone down. I think I’ll buy an otterbox once I can afford it, and I doubt my next phone will be an iPhone.
Also, I think I need to rethink working 2 jobs while going to school full time. Im running myself ragged. I’m just so tired, Im always so tired.

My sister managed to replace the screen on both her iPad and iPhone herself for £40. Apparently it is really easy and there are plenty of guides. I wouldn’t know though since I’m in the Android camp and the last few phones I've had have been borderline indestructible.

I used to be able to do that, but ever since touchID became a thing, its more hassle than its worth. Trust me, I have the same training that apple geniuses get, but Im starting to lose faith in apple.

I have never understood how easy it is to destroy iPhone screens.
That being said, I repeat the issue with Apple’s quality. I have a coworker who is a huge apple head (he does iOS development) and even he has admitted that their direction seems to be more toward downsizing while keeping prices high, rather than bolstering the devices they have or innovating new ones.
EDIT: Heeey wait a minute. You’re denver! What am I saying you know this already.
Question: Do you think any of Apple’s business practices are causing a drop in quality, or do you think it’s their design/engineering capabilities going down?

Today I fumbled taking my Droid RAZR MAXX out of my pocket, it fell forward, slammed at a 90 degree angle screen-first into the flat corner of my door , then clattered down to the hardword floor and slid back about 4 feet. I picked it up, and it was perfectly fine.
I’ve learned that before the screen breaks, you’ll wear out the gyroscope that measures phone direction and velocity by dropping it too many times. That’s insane.
I don’t know why Apple hasn’t figured out how to make their phones function similarly, but my guess is that they have a customer service infrastructure that relies on the repair fees for broken phones.

I’m the same, the amount of times I have dropped my Oneplus One onto my tiled kitchen floor from waist height or higher and the screen is still intact makes me think how does apple get it so wrong there as I’d probably have been through 3+ screens on an iPhone if I had one

I’ve wondered...
Cell phones have been around for what, about 20 years now? So why do they still shatter when you drop them from 3 feet up?

I wanted to ask a bunch of questions about the Oneplus One, which looks cool, but apparently it’s not available on Verizon, and doesn’t have the contexual cores in the X8 (nor the insane battery life) that is in my current phone, but is otherwise a huge step up. So that shoots down that hope. of switching.
Basically, I’d lose contexual notifications, have to switch carriers, and drop 30 hours of battery life (and from about the same size of battery too) for a much better screen, lighter weight and a better camera. But goddammit I want it.

Because why make a $200 profit when you can make a $400 profit and people will still buy them regardless.
Also, we like shiny glassy smooth phones. Kinda the opposite of sturdy and rugged.

It is unlocked across the globe and probably has the best battery life of any phone available. I’ve had mine for a year now and I’m still getting 2 day battery life out of it.

True, and I have the solution anyway. But this isn’t really “shiny and smooth”

it’s probably the best phone I’ve ever had, the battery life is great and it handles notifications very well, not sure if it does contextual as I’m not entirely sure what they are but you should be able to use it on verizon

Do it yerself. I managed to replace the screen of my Ipod a few years ago, it took a fucking century but at least it got repaired.

By contexual notifications I mean the Active notification settings + moto assist. The stuff in the picture. That’s probably the biggest reason to get a Moto X over the OnePlus One, from the looks of things.
As for battery life, there’s quite a few other phones (including my current one) out there better than the Oneplus One, but it’s probably got the best battery for a full HD screen.

I’m of a similar mind regarding Apple. Love my MacBook but my next phone will probably be a Nexus of somekind. They are much better quality and I don’t have to worry about Google/Motorola/whomever having a fit because I screwed with a product I own. Plus I've had a 2nd gen Nexus 7 for a couple years and it's amazing. I can also buy goddamn books through the Nook store/app on Android.

Gorilla Glass screen? If so, that shits very strong. I’ve dropped my RAZR on the screen multiple times, no damage to the screen.

I love my OPO
Its great.

All of motorola and apple’s phones use Gorilla Glass.
I have no idea why Apple’s break so easily. It has to do with the shock absorbing materials transferring more energy to the brittle glass, is my thought. A lot of the droid phones are made with Kevlar now, which tends to vastly improve the diffusion of shock when you drop it.

Yeah, my Droid has kevlar on the back which probably helps.
